Total Fertility Rate, Alberta and Alberta Health Services Continuum Zones

Description

This Alberta Official Statistic compares the total fertility rate (TFR) across the five Alberta Health Services Continuum Zones for 2014. The TFR represents the number of children a woman would have on average if the current age-specific fertility rates prevailed throughout her childbearing years (ages 15 to 49). It is one of the most useful indicators of fertility because it gives the best picture of how many children women are currently having.

Usage Considerations

Total fertility rate (TFR) is created by summing the age-specific fertility rates from mothers ages 15 to 49. The age-specific fertility rates for a given age are calculated by dividing the number of births to women of a given age by the number of women of that age.

The TFR is interpreted as the estimated number of children a woman would have on average if the current age-specific fertility rates prevailed throughout her childbearing years (ages 15-49).

Each birth is assigned to the continuum zone based on the mother's residence. Only women who are Alberta residents are counted.

Many Alberta women give birth in the Lloydminster Hospital each year. Births in the Lloydminster hospital are estimated by using physician claims data.

Alberta is composed of five continuum zones as follows: South, Calgary, Central, Edmonton and North.

The denominator of the fertility rate uses population estimates from the adjusted Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) Population Registry. See Data notes from Alberta Health’s Interactive Health Data Application site’s data notes for further details.
