Usage Considerations
Vital statistics include records dealing with births, marriages, stillbirths and deaths; all events which have to do with an individual's entrance or departure from life, together with changes in civil status. Live births are defined by a complete expulsion or extraction from the mother, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, of a fetus in which, after expulsion or extraction, there is breathing, beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of a voluntary muscle. Birth order refers to the number of live births to the mother, including this birth.
