Usage Considerations

Educational attainment is the highest level of schooling completed. Questions relating to educational attainment were changed in 1990, to better capture the relationship between educational attainment and labour market outcomes.

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a household survey carried out monthly by Statistics Canada. It provides estimates of employment and unemployment which are among the most timely and important measures of performance of the Canadian economy. The LFS is also a major source of information on the personal characteristics of the working-age population, including age, sex, marital status, educational attainment, and family characteristics.

0-8 years: Primary education, grade 8 or lower. Some High School: Attended but did not complete secondary school. High School Graduate: Received a high school diploma. Some postsecondary: These represent those who worked toward, but did not complete, a degree, certificate or diploma from an educational institution, including a university beyond the secondary level. Postsecondary Certificate or Diploma: Completed a certificate (including a trade certificate) or diploma from an educational institution beyond the secondary level.

Users may notice an “x” value in the CSV file. These denote figures that have been suppressed to meet confidentiality requirements of the Statistics Act.

Statistics Canada has an established history of applying a standard revision to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) estimates following the release of postcensal population estimates from each census of population. This revision includes an update of the LFS estimates to reflect the most recent population estimates; an update of geographic boundaries; methodological enhancements to imputation; as well as an update of seasonal adjustment.

The latest revision has impacted the estimates for 2001 to 2014 and the revised figures have been released in late January and early February 2015.
