Description

This report describes the results of a telephone survey conducted in 2012 of recent immigrants to Alberta concerning their experiences with settlement services in the province, their information needs, and their economic and social integration outcomes. The goal was to provide an evidence‐base to guide decisions about the scope and character of future settlement services in Alberta.

Description

In July 2011 The Minister of Municipal Affairs received a petition from the electors of the Village of Champion to "conduct an inquiry of the municipal affairs of the Village of Champion for the year 2010 to present." An inspector was appointed in November 2011 and the inspection took place from January 9 to January 11, 2012. The report of the inspector points out a number of items that appear to be in contravention of the Municipal Government Act. The findings and recommendations in this report are intended to be helpful to the Village Council and residents and hopefully help guide a return to clear understanding and productive discussions among the parties.

Description

Upon receiving a request to conduct a dissolution study of the City of Cold Lake, the Minister of Municipal Affairs appointed inspectors in November 2009 to conduct an inspection on any matter connected with the management, administration or operation of the City of Cold Lake and to report on matters which they believe fell within the guidelines of "irregular, improper or improvident conduct by Council, individual Councillors or by municipal staff". The report focuses on two significant elements: the inspection conducted under Section 571 of the Municipal Government Act, and a "Review of Municipal Sustainability" wherein the expressed desire of the City of Cold Lake to dissolve was examined.

There is little doubt that had the Villages involved in this Commission presented this water supply system that was to only involve their water usage volumes alone, the project would not have been approved or supported by the Alberta Government. Other alternatives to their water issues would have had to be determined and examined. If it concluded that the Municipal District of Rocky View No.44 and Kneehill County's decision not to annually contribute in net water volume based on their 55% water allocation share nor to be responsible for their 55% share of the debenture debt is not appropriate and lead exclusively to the direct financial deficits of the Commission, then these rural municipalities and tem alone should be held responsible for the financial demise of the Commission.
