Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals with unique physical characteristics including extraordinary tensile strength, poor heat conduction and resistance to chemical attack. For these reasons, asbestos was often used as an ingredient in a wide range of construction products. Unprotected workers can be exposed to asbestos mainly by breathing in the fibres which are released when the asbestos containing materials (ACM) are disturbed. During building demolition, asbestos fibres may be released if building materials containing asbestos have not been removed. If the building was built before 1990 there is a chance that some materials may contain asbestos.

On May 22, 2003, Health Canada issued an advisory warning Canadians about cosmetic nail preparations containing methyl methacrylate (MMA). The advisory issued because this chemical can adversely affect the health of persons exposed to it. Section 16 of Canada’s Food and Drug Act states that no cosmetic may cause injury to the health of the user. As a result, the sale and use of cosmetic nail preparations containing MMA was banned in Canada.

The hazard assessment and control process provides a consistent approach for employers and workers to identify and control hazards in the workplace. It allows everyone to focus their efforts in the right areas, and to develop worker training, inspections, emergency response plans, etc. specific to the hazards at their work sites. Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation requires employers to conduct hazard assessments, and to either eliminate the hazards identified or put controls in place to protect against them.

This user guide provides an overview of what leading indicators are, and how and why they might be applied to strengthen your organization’s health and safety culture and performance. Some leading indicators may be more effective than others, depending on an organization’s current level of OHS performance. For that reason, the user guide considers three categories of OHS performance: those that are focused on maintaining compliance with Alberta legislation, those looking for improvement (beyond compliance), and those in pursuit of continuous learning for the highest levels of performance. A tool is provided to help establish which category best describes your organization’s current OHS performance level, as well as sample leading indicators for each performance category — for your consideration.
