Fuel sellers who hold inventories of clear gasoline and clear diesel are required to complete the Fuel Tax Online Inventory Declaration by January 31, 2024. Inventories of clear gasoline (including ethanol blended gasoline) and clear diesel (including blended diesel) held as of 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2024 are subject to a tax rate of 9 cents per litre.

Further to the extension of the fuel tax relief explained in Special Notice Vol. 1 No. 47, the Government of Alberta will resume collecting fuel tax effective the beginning of day on January 1, 2024 at the rate of $0.09 per litre on clear gasoline and diesel, ethanol, ethanol blended gasoline, biodiesel, blended diesel, methanol and condensate used to generate power in an internal combustion or turbine engine. The fuel tax rate applicable to marked gasoline and diesel remains at nil.

Fuel sellers who hold inventories of clear gasoline and clear diesel are required to complete the Fuel Tax Online Inventory Declaration by December 31, 2023. Inventories of clear gasoline (including ethanol blended gasoline) and clear diesel (including blended diesel) held as of 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2023 are eligible for a refund of fuel tax paid at a rate of 4.5 cents per litre.

This special notice provided by Tax and Revenue Administration announces that beginning April 1, 2022 the Government of Alberta will stop collecting fuel tax in order to provide relief from the current high fuel prices. Collection of fuel tax is expected to resume by the later of July 1, 2022 and the time when West Texas Intermediate prices fall below $80 US per barrel. Special notices are time-specific, and meant to be transitory in nature. The information may eventually be incorporated into other publications such as information circulars or web content.

Effective April 1, 2022, the provincial fuel tax rate was reduced to $0.00 on gasoline and diesel fuels (see Eligible Fuels for a complete list). The government will review the collection of the fuel tax on a quarterly basis and, if required, consider reinstating collection in stages. The first review will occur in June 2022. This instruction guide will assist fuel sellers in completing the Fuel Tax Online Inventory Declaration form.
