Description

The report is a summary of an extensive literature search related to landscape conservation tools in North America and internationally. It identifies the types of conservation tools that could be tailored for application in Alberta to protect native prairie grasslands. Additional opportunities for future research are also outlined, which may help catalyze the formation of partnerships to protect Alberta's intact native grasslands. The report addresses Alberta's South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, Strategy 3.14b: exploring conservation approaches and tools for protecting intact native grasslands.

It aims to serve as a guide to understanding and harnessing the potential of landscape metrics as indicators of environmental quality. The goal is to facilitate better integration of ecological knowledge into land use and land management decision making, by providing succinct and recognizable characterizations of landscape pattern/process relationships across a broad spectrum of North American environments.
