The MULTISAR program is focused on multi-species conservation at the landscape level that promotes stewardship through voluntary participation of landholders on both Crown and private lands. It is a collaborative effort among landholders, Alberta Conservation Association, Alberta Environment and Parks, and the Prairie Conservation Forum. This report summarizes MULTISAR's accomplishments in 2022-2023 in its three primary program areas: habitat conservation strategies; education, outreach and awareness; and research, monitoring, and evaluation.

The report is a summary of an extensive literature search related to landscape conservation tools in North America and internationally. It identifies the types of conservation tools that could be tailored for application in Alberta to protect native prairie grasslands. Additional opportunities for future research are also outlined, which may help catalyze the formation of partnerships to protect Alberta's intact native grasslands. The report addresses Alberta's South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, Strategy 3.14b: exploring conservation approaches and tools for protecting intact native grasslands.

Description

The long-billed curlew is the largest member of the sandpiper family and is distinguishable by its long downward curved bill and large size. It has been designated a Species of Special Concern in Alberta and Canada due to the contraction of its range and small, possibly declining, population. Habitat alteration is the primary threat to this species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining the current distribution and population of long-billed curlew in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.
