Forest company forest management plans detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 0200039 allocated to West Fraser Mills Ltd. and Tolko Industries Ltd. (formally known as Gordon Buchanan Enterprises Ltd. and Tolko Industries Ltd.). The FMP includes the FMA and non-FMA portions of Forest Management Unit S21, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area. The DFA is located within the Upper Peace, Lower Peace and Upper Athabasca Land-Use Framework planning regions in north central Alberta; it falls within the Dry Mixedwood, Central Mixedwood, Upper Foothills and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.

Description

As part of ongoing grizzly bear management and recovery efforts in Alberta, the Department of Sustainable Resource Development has been annually conducting population estimates in bear management units along the eastern slopes of Alberta since 2004. In 2003, a detailed analysis of genetic samples from grizzly bears, collected over a 22-year period, was conducted to delineate genetically distinct population units. This analysis showed that previous population unit boundaries did not fully match genetic population units and therefore recommendations were made to modify the management unit boundaries at that time.

The story of West Nile virus in North America is a very recent one. The virus arrived in New York in 1999 and established populations in migratory birds on the Atlantic Flyway. it then systematically increased its population and spread to birds on the other primary migration pathways, moving steadily westward to the Mississippi, Central and by 2004, the Pacific Flyway. The virus infects birds of many species without causing visible illness, but cases fatal infections in Corvidae (crows, jays and their relatives). It can occasionally spill over and infect horses and humans, and can cause rare fatal results.
