Description

The Water Conservation Policy for Upstream Oil and Gas Operations provides policy direction for water use in major upstream oil and gas operations where additional water conservation measures are feasible. This policy replaces the Water Conservation and Allocation Policy for Oilfield Injection (2006), incorporating water conservation as a requirement for all major upstream oil and gas operations.

Description

In 2012, Canada and Alberta launched a Joint Oil Sands Monitoring (JOSM) to improve, consolidate and integrate existing disparate monitoring arrangements into a single, transparent government-led approach with a strong scientific base. A Joint Canada-Alberta Implementation Plan for Oil Sands Monitoring was developed, describing a phased and adaptive approach to monitoring in the oil sands region to be undertaken over three years (2012-2015). Included in the Plan was a call for an external expert peer review plan after Year Three. This report presents the findings of the expert review panel.

Description

This document provides direction to manage fluid tailings volumes during and after mine operation in order to manage and decrease liability and environmental risk resulting from the accumulation of fluid tailings on the landscape. The Framework builds on, but does not replace, existing provincial legislation and policy on tailings management and reclamation. It will not replace existing management systems. However, it will fill a management gap by providing a framework in which to monitor and manage long-term fluid tailings accumulation and reclamation on the landscape in the Lower Athabasca Region. Requirements under the framework will be administered primarily through the Oil Sands Conservation Act and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

Environmental Impact Assessment and associated applications pertaining to the proposed Canadian Natural Resources Limited Grouse In Situ Oil Sands Project. The proposal includes the use of steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology for extraction of bitumen, a bitumen processing facility with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day (7,949 m3/d) and a production life of approximately 20 years. The location is approximately 75 kilometres northeast of Lac La Biche, Alberta in Lac La Biche County. The EIA was deemed complete in 2015. Provides direction and guidance related to oil sands mine reclamation and closure planning, and certification. The framework is a preliminary step in defining a structured process and information requirements for oil sands mine reclamation certification. As it stands now, the Framework is not complete and requires further development before implementation. The conditions of approvals issued to each oil sands mine operator under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act continue to provide direction for reclamation and closure planning. When completed, the Framework will support applications for reclamation certification, after which the land can be returned to the Crown.
