Description

The purpose of this manual is to provide a standardized sampling protocol for assessing bat community composition and relative abundance of the nine species of bats found in Alberta. The goal is to ensure that all studies on bats in Alberta collect the same types of information in standard formats. In turn, this will promote centralized tracking of bat studies to identify information gaps, facilitate monitoring of bat distributions and population trends, promote information-sharing between projects, and enable between-project and between-year comparisons.

Writing on Stone Provincial Park is located along an area of the Milk River where rocky outcroppings are abundant. This terrain provides excellent roosting habitat for several species of bats. There are also clumps of cottonwood trees along the river, which provide foraging habitat for all prairie bats. While bats have been captured in the park for many years, there has been no compilation of records, and there has been confusion over what areas of the park have and have not been surveyed for bats. This report describes the capture records of the author for bat work done in both the public areas of park and the restricted area of the park south of the Milk River. The report also compiles netting records for bat work done in the park since 1985.

Previous bat studies conducted in Alberta have been limited in geographical scope and no long-term, province-wide, standardized monitoring has ever been conducted. A standard protocol for surveying bats in Alberta was recently developed, with the goal of ensuring that all studies on bats in the province collect the same types of information in standard formats. The report presents the results of a study conducted with the dual purpose of surveying bats in central and northwestern Alberta, while also performing a field test of the newly developed protocols.
