The Lower Foothills subregion is a classic example of multiple use land. The land provides summer range for livestock, primary habitat for wildlife, productive watersheds, timber and recreational areas. The purpose of this guide was to develop a framework that would easily group the ecological sites and vegetative community types in the subregion. This guide represents the analysis of 1,950 plots representing 115 community types. The dominant plant species, canopy cover and environmental conditions are outlined for each type.

This provides specific guidance to stakeholders when assessing the additionality of a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions or sequestration of GHGs under the Alberta emission offset system. In order to demonstrate the additionality of the activities that are included or proposed to be included in the development or revision of an emission offset quantification protocol, the use of the tools contained in this technical guidance is a requirement for both the Alberta Climate Change Office and stakeholders. This document explains both the roles each of these parties play, and the process used for reviewing and assessing additionality during protocol development or revision.

The province of Alberta is covered by a broad spectrum of vegetation regions and have been classified into 6 natural regions and 21 subregions for the province (Natural Regions and Subregions of Alberta 2006). Each of the regions consists of groups of plant communities which are influenced by environmental conditions and human impacts. This guide represents the preliminary analysis of 129 plots described in the Athabasca Plain subregion. The 129 plots represent 36 plant community types. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soil and environmental conditions are outlined for each plant community type.
