The directive provides a framework for the use of Crown Land Reservations to serve as a tool for public land management. The purpose of this policy is to establish how the Department, other ministries, and agencies are required to administer and responsibly use Crown land reservations under the Public Lands Act (Section 18c). The Land Use Reservation Program (LURP) is a systematic approach to land management that makes use of reservations to identify and manage multiple intents and objectives for a parcel of public land. The system enables multiple regulators to manage public land for intended outcomes. This policy directive re-affirms and updates the use of reservations and the supporting program as a key land management tool for managing multiple interests that often times compete for access to, and use of Alberta’s finite public land base.

The Alberta Acid Deposition Management Framework [2022] is intended to identify potential acidification issues at an early stage and establishes a tiered approach to addressing these issues depending on their magnitude. Also, it includes two companion materials. The first provides a technical handbook (‘Handbook’) on the appropriate acid deposition assessment to be undertaken when it is required. The second provides stakeholder comments on the original draft framework [2020] and Environment and Parks response to these comments.

This technical handbook outlines a methodology for conducting regional/project-based acid deposition assessments using the revised acid deposition management framework [2022], which includes a new critical loads function and a steady-state mass balance approach to determine critical loads of acidity for sulphur and nitrogen deposition. The handbook should be utilized to determine suitable acid deposition assessments when required. It has a companion tool (i.e., ADECT) and a GIS package that can be used to calculate exceedances as per Section 3 of the Handbook.
