Description

This report recounts results from an aerial ungulate survey conducted in Wildlife Management Unit 116 in 2024. Aerial surveys are the primary method used to assess the population size, distribution, population trends and herd composition of ungulates in Alberta. This information supports the effective management and conservation of ungulates, and is used to set hunting licence allocations, identify areas with agricultural depredation problems, and determine priority areas for recovery actions.

Alberta Environment and Parks has finalized a new Alberta Ambient Air Quality Guideline for total reduced sulphur compounds, to be used for odour management. Alberta Environment and Parks recognizes that further guidance is needed to reduce the operational burden related to reporting values above the Alberta Ambient Air Quality Guideline, while still achieving the desired outcome of odour management. The Air Monitoring Directive requires immediate reporting of exceedances of ambient air quality objectives and guidelines. This protocol is to outline electronic reporting procedures for ambient TRS monitoring for values above the Alberta Ambient Air Quality Guideline for both industrial operations and Alberta airsheds.

Description

Cyanobacteria (also referred to as blue-green algae) are common photosynthetic bacteria that live in surface waters. Under favorable conditions, such as warm water and high nutrient content, these bacteria can form nuisance “blooms”. The presence of blooms in recreational water causes unpleasant aesthetics and exposure to some toxin-producing blooms may pose potential health risks. Contact with blooms can cause skin rashes and irritation, itchy eyes, and ear infections. Inhaling water may cause allergic-like reactions, runny noses or sore throats. Ingestion of toxins can cause a range of symptoms (e.g., hepatotoxic or neurotoxic effects, and even death). There has been increased public awareness as a result of research over the past 20 years, recent monitoring efforts, and increased public education on the topic. Historical data collected through the Alberta Atmospheric Deposition Monitoring Program were evaluated to understand the current state, long-term trends, annual and seasonal variability at select atmospheric deposition stations. Concentrations of ions in precipitation from seven stations distributed throughout the province were evaluated over 2011 to 2020. Concentrations measured were also compared to those measured in other jurisdictions.
