Informed by the work and recommendations of the Northwest Caribou Sub-Regional Task Force, the Bistcho Lake Sub-Regional Plan supports management approaches that support naturally functioning ecosystems that will benefit a wide range of species. It demonstrates Alberta's commitment to develop our resources while supporting other land uses and the variety of wildlife and ecosystems across the sub-region. This holistic approach to land and resource management will maintain resilient ecosystems capable of supporting Alberta's economic, social, and environmental objectives for the Bistcho Lake Sub-region.

The Northwest Caribou Sub-regional Task Force was one of three task forces established in November 2019 to develop recommendations to inform the development of sub-regional plans to support caribou recovery in Alberta. The task force included representatives from First Nations, Métis groups, municipalities, environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), the forest industry, the energy industry, trappers, motorized recreation groups, and other land-users. This reports presents the recommendations made by the task force to inform the development of a sub-regional plan for the Bistcho Lake sub-regional area, which includes the Bistcho woodland caribou range.

This report documents the assessment of the performance of the GIS-based method used to evaluate the intactness of riparian habitats along the shorelines of Pigeon, Gull, Sylvan, and Buffalo lakes and their associated tributaries. Both desktop and field validation methods were used and the ability of the GIS assessment approach to capture relative differences in intactness locally and regionally was tested. Overall the method proved to be reliable for assessing and comparing the intactness of riparian management areas across large geographical areas.
