Description

Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park is located in Kananaskis Country approximately 70 kilometres west of Calgary. The intent of a wildland park is to retain large areas of high quality, natural landscape where opportunities for backcountry recreation and tourism activities such as hiking, trail riding, hunting, guiding and outfitting are provided in a way that ensures the retention of the land in a natural state and minimizes interference with natural processes. Management plans are prepared to ensure that the desired management intent and objectives are implemented. The plan will define objectives for preservation, heritage appreciation, and outdoor recreation and tourism activities. It will also define appropriate uses.

This report summarizes the information gathered on the water quality of Field Lake during the initial period of study (1981 - 1986) and from three sets of samples collected during the summer of 1997. The impact of the effluent discharge is assessed by comparing 1) water quality two years before and four years after the discharge began, 2) concentrations of substances in the lake water with relevant Alberta and Canadian water quality guidelines, and 3) 1985-86 data with 1997 data.

Description

Lesser Slave Lake is the third largest lake in Alberta and supports important fisheries, provincial parks, recreation areas, water supplies, and other uses. The lake has been well investigated with respect to fisheries but a comprehensive water quality or limnological survey has not been carried out on it previously. To document existing water quality of the lake and its major inflows, particularly with regard to nutrient and algal conditions, a water quality survey was conducted in the 1991-93 period. The two main basins of the lake, five tributaries, and the lake=s outflow were sampled monthly during the ice-free season, and additional sampling was done on the inflow and outflow of Buffalo Bay.

Description

Water quality in the North Saskatchewan River is monitored for the Prairie Provinces Water Board (PPWB) at the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Occasional exceedences of PPWB objectives for copper, fecal coliform bacteria, zinc and lead prompted an investigation into sources that may contribute to these high concentrations. Historical water quality data are available for point sources and the river in the urban area, but little is known about the contribution of the creeks and point sources discharging to the river along the last 100 km of river before it reaches the border.
