The Canadian Ministers of the Environment endorsed the Canada-Wide standard for petroleum hydrocarbons in soil (PHC CWS) on May 1, 2001, allowing jurisdictions to begin their implementation activities. Workshops were held to gain input on implementation options for Alberta. This report is intended to capture the input from the participants and provide input for Alberta Environment's consideration when making implementation decisions related to the method.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 9000028 allocated to West Fraser Mills Ltd. (Slave Lake), (formerly known as Slave Lake Pulp Corporation). The FMP covers Forest Management Unit (FMU) S20 in north central Alberta. It is located almost entirely within the Upper Athabasca Land-Use Framework planning region. There is a small area in the southwest corner of FMU S20 that falls within the Upper Peace Land-use Framework planning region. It falls within the Upper Foothills, Lower Foothills, Central Mixedwood and Dry Mixedwood Natural Subregions.

This workshop was held in order to review the scientific basis for the Canada-Wide standard for petroleum hydrocarbons in soil (PHC CWS) and to review the prescriptive and performance based aspects of the analytical method. The workshop also reviewed the role of the Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories in accreditation and allowed Alberta laboratories and consultants an opportunity to comment on early applications of the method.

For many years, Alberta has extensively developed its energy minerals. However, the province also possesses a wide range of other minerals: base and precious metals, gemstones and industrial minerals. To enhance the economic benefit of these resources for all Albertans, Alberta's throne speech for 1999/2000 committed the government to develop a policy on non-energy minerals, streamline the administration of mining regulations, and improve geological information on minerals. Alberta Energy assembled a team from across government to establish the strategies for meeting these commitments. This document presents the results of the work of this team, which is a framework that outlines the vision, goals and strategic directions for ensuring orderly, environmentally responsible mineral exploration and development in Alberta.
