This alert was released in response to complaints about aggressive, high-pressure sales tactics by commercial providers of workplace safety training for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). It informs employers that there is no requirement to use a commercial training provider or materials created by a commercial company to conduct WHMIS training.

Emergency escape lines provide workers with a means of making a quick, controlled descent from a rig’s elevated platform in the event of a blowout, wellhead fire, or other emergency. Improperly installed anchors can fail when need most, resulting in serious worker injury or death.

Description

Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act applies to any worker engaged in an occupation. The OHS Act defines an “occupation” as every “occupation, employment, business, calling or pursuit over which the Legislature has jurisdiction”. The broad definition is intended to ensure that all persons engaged in work activities are protected under the OHS Act. Since a worker doesn’t need to be paid in order to be protected under the OHS Act, the OHS Act also applies to volunteers.
