Description

Written in Stone, a full-day field program for students at the Junior High School level, examines the geologic landforms between Calgary and Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. The program consists of a road log and four stops. The road log contains information on the landforms visible from the highway and poses questions for discussion; the four stops represent four chapters in the geology of the Rocky Mountains - deposition, rock forming, mountain building and erosion. During each stop, students participate in an activity which demonstrates the geologic processes.

The Winter Wildlife Game is part of a series of booklets on winter ecology produced by Kananaskis Country Environmental Literacy Program. The programs have been developed for use at the elementary school level, but can be modified for use at higher grade levels. Each booklet contains a series of activities which can be associated with many topic areas. These activities can be integrated into unit teaching plans to help form the basis of a comprehensive unit of study on winter ecology. The Winter Wildlife Game is an action-packed simulation game that allows students to role-play some winter animals, discovering how winter conditions and adaptations can be a matter of life or death!

The Un-Vacant Lot focuses on the topics of communities and interdependence. A community is a place where a number of plants and animals meet their needs. Interdependence describes the way a person, place or thing depends upon any other person, place or thing. Every living organism on our planet lives in a community and depends on other living and non-living things for its continued existence; no organism can live without affecting or being affected by the environment. The Un-Vacant Lot may take place in the early autumn to serve as an introduction to the year-long study of communities. The Un -Vacant Lot is an activity-based examination of interdependence and communities. The program is divided into three sections: pre-field study activities (conducted in the classroom) that centre on topics such as interactions, communities, and interdependence; a field study at a local vacant lot, where students discover that the vacant lot is in fact full of life; and in-class post-field study...

The program Wilderness and You encourages students to understand their environment and the implications of their affect on the environment by looking at it in its natural state - a state which is often called wilderness. This two to three hour program provides a first hand look at that natural environment, man’s relationship to the wilderness, and the limitations that both man and the wilderness have.

Where Forest Meets Prairie focuses on the topics of communities, environmental factors, and adaptations. A community is a place where an assemblage of plants and animals live and meet their needs. The program explores an area where forest communities and grassland communities lie adjacent to one another in a patchwork or mosaic pattern. Environmental factors such as moisture, light, and temperature are investigated, along with adaptations, characteristics that help plants and animals to survive in their environment. Where Forest Meets Prairie is an activity-based examination of these topics. The program is divided into three sections: a pre-field study activity (conducted in the classroom) called Adapt - A - Human; a field study at the Montane Trail in Bow Valley Provincial Park where students conduct their own investigations; and in-class post-field activities.

This publication is part of a series of field study programs produced by the Environmental Education Program of Parks and Protected Areas in Kananaskis Country and Fish Creek Provincial Park. These publications have been written to address the goals of Alberta Community Development and increase students’ environmental awareness, understanding, interaction, and responsibility for the natural world in which they live. The publications are developed in a close working relationship with teachers, community educators and program writers. Programs focus on the areas of environmental education, science, social studies, and language arts. They are also developed to emphasize elements of environmental literacy, lifestyle, and citizenship.
