The Alberta Activity Index (AAX) closely tracks economic activity. Developed by Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, it is a weighted average of nine monthly indicators (employment, average weekly earnings, retail trade, wholesale trade, manufacturing, new truck sales, housing starts, rigs drilling and oil production). The Alberta Spatial Price Survey measures price differences between selected Alberta communities for a basket of goods and services at a specific point in time, using Edmonton as the index base. This means that Edmonton is benchmarked at 100.0 and serves as the basis of comparison. As such, communities having an index value above (or below) 100.0 experienced higher (or lower) prices than Edmonton for a particular basket of commodities.
