Capital investment was the largest contributor to Alberta’s economic growth between the mid-nineties and 2014. However, low oil and gas prices resulted in declining capital investment in Alberta in 2015 and capital investment is expected to remain a drag on economic growth in 2016 as energy investment continues to decline.

Capital investment was the largest contributor to Alberta’s economic growth between the mid-nineties and 2014. However, low oil and gas prices resulted in declining capital investment in Alberta in 2015 and 2016. Although rising oil and gas prices are expected to lead to some improvement for the conventional oil and gas sector, capital investment in most other sectors is expected to remain weak this year.

As part of the Alberta Jobs Plan, the Alberta government has invested $70 million in a Capital Investment Tax Credit (CITC) for manufacturing, processing and tourism infrastructure that will spur economic diversification and job creation. This is a 2-year program that provides a non-refundable tax credit valued at 10% of a corporation’s eligible capital expenditures, up to $5 million.
