Description

The Milk River Basin Species at Risk Conservation Strategy outlines a process by provide appropriate management on critical parts of the landscape to achieve multi-species conservation. This year's report includes a summary of existing information on species at risk, identification of data gaps, results of fish and wildlife inventories from within the project area, and a species selection process. Also included are habitat suitability models for project management species, maps showing habitat distribution throughout the Milk River Basin, descriptions of natural processes within the grassland natural region, and a demonstration of beneficial management practices.

This wildlife status report looks at the chestnut-collared longspur, a small ground-nesting passerine that is native to the shortgrass and mixed grass prairies throughout the United States and Canada, including the Grassland Natural Region of Alberta. The species is fairly common in Alberta, but their general status was re-evaluated in 2010 from Secure to Sensitive due to significant annual declines in their population. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

In Alberta, the black-throated green warbler has been designated a Species of Special Concern, and the bay-breasted warbler and Cape May warbler have been recommended for Species of Special Concern status due to perceived population declines and projected future habitat loss. All three species are neotropical migrants that breed in the Canadian boreal forest. This plan provides background information on the warblers and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining breeding populations of all three species throughout their historical range in Alberta.
