Surveys were conducted in the Brooks (K-blocks) and Hanna (H-blocks) areas during June 12-21, 2000. Nine burrowing owl nest sites were located in the K-blocks, and two nests in the H-blocks. Specific location details for all nests found have been removed from this document to provide additional nest site and landholder confidentiality.

Description

In Canada, all of the known naturally occurring populations of western blue flag occur in the Cardston area of southwestern Alberta, within 10 km of the United States border. Prior to this project, six sites of naturally occurring western blue flag were confirmed in Alberta. As a result of investigations carried out in 2000, it is believed that only four of the six remain. Two new sites were discovered near previously known locations. Inventories conducted at all sites in 2000 revealed a total of 8705 stems. Information is inadequate to determine populations trends at most sites; however, western blue flag appears to be declining at a site in Police Outpost Provincial Park.

Description

In 1996 harlequin ducks were added to the Yellow "A" list of endangered and threatened species in Alberta. This document reports on the results of aerial surveys by helicopters to evaluate harlequin ducks populations in the Oldman River basin and to supplement previous instream foot surveys from 1997-2000. Data suggests a staging area for harlequin ducks occurs on the Oldman/Livingstone rivers, which suggests the Oldman River is an important harlequin duck stream in SW Alberta. The Castle River system appears to have few breeding harlequin ducks, but it is not known whether this has always been the case and it is important to investigate if the population is declining, stable or increasing. Continued monitoring of the two drainage systems are recommended. Management recommendations include conducting aerial and foot surveys as well as radio telemetry to identify important sections of stream and habitat used by harlequin ducks for nesting and brood rearing.
