Description

The piping plover is an endangered species in Alberta. In 2001, the Alberta Piping Plover Recovery Team was formed, and an inaugural recovery plan (2002-2004) was launched. An updated plan, with similar goals, strategies and activities was drafted in 2005. These recovery plans describe a variety of actions necessary to achieve a provincial population of 300 adult birds, no net loss of breeding habitat in the province, and a median fledging rate of 1.25 chicks/pair/year. This report summarizes activities completed during implementation of the Alberta Piping Plover Recovery Plan 2005-2010, and sets the stage for a new recovery plan to be drafted in 2010.

Description

In 2000, the piping plover was reaffirmed as an endangered species in Alberta. In 2001, the Alberta Piping Plover Recovery Team was formed, and completed the Alberta Piping Plover Recovery Plan 2002-2004 which was approved in April 2002. The plan describes a variety of strategies and actions to be implemented over a three-year period to achieve a provincial population of 300 breeding adults, no net loss of breeding habitat in the province, and a median fledging rate of 1.25 chicks/pair/year. This report reviews activities completed during the implementation of this plan and provides guidance towards the drafting of an updated recover plan.

Description

The piping plover is listed as "endangered" under Alberta's Wildlife Act, and in most other jurisdictions in North America. Poor productivity as a result of predation of eggs and chicks has been identified as the greatest source of reproductive failure for piping plovers in Alberta. The Alberta Piping Plover Recovery Plan identified a need for increased predator management in order to boost reproductive success. This report was produced in order to research and compile information on the various tools, techniques and tactics used to control predators thought to be a threat to piping plover reproductive success. This information was compiled through searches of a variety of bibliographic databases and Internet resources.

The mountain plover is listed as a Sensitive species in Alberta. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

The purpose of this study was to survey known and prospective mountain plover nesting habitats in southeastern Alberta in order to search for and census breeding birds and to assess habitat potential and suitability. There was an emphasis on the documentation of high potential habitats, and surveying habitats with high suitability. Results support previous assessments that the population is very low and erratic and that suitable habitat is very restricted. In areas where the management priority is Mountain plover conservation, a program of habitat management is recommended, including the implementation of intensive winter/spring grazing and prescribed burns, and population surveys at key times of the year.

Description

The piping plover is designated as an Endangered species in Alberta and across Canada. Every five years since 1991, a continent-wide survey for piping plovers has been conducted. In May 2001, aerial reconnaissance was conducted over much of the core breeding range in east-central Alberta. The objectives were to identify waterbodies that have not been previously surveyed, but which contain areas of suitable habitat that could be surveyed in 2001, and to visit a number of lakes scheduled to be surveyed in order to identify areas of suitable habitat and to minimize or eliminate census effort in areas with unsuitable breeding habitat. Overall, the surveys identified 11 previously surveyed lakes that had no potential to piping plovers in 2001, and 22 new lakes with at least moderate potential to support birds during the breeding season. Aerial reconnaissance appears to be an effective way to identify lakes that may be occupied by piping plovers.
