Description

Porsild's bryum is a small moss that is naturally rare and widely scattered throughout the northern hemisphere. In Canada, there are a total of 17 known populations with six of these occurring in Alberta. The Alberta Porsild's Bryum Recovery Plan identifies actions required to maintain or restore the current provincial status of the species. This report was commissioned to analyze habitat, substrate, and hydrological data collected from several Porsild's bryum populations and subpopulations in Alberta, and to interpret the findings as they relate to the goals and objectives of the provincial recovery plan for the species.

Description

Porsild's bryum is a disjunct moss found in British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland and Nunavut. In Alberta, where it is listed as Endangered, it is found in 12 small subpopulations in the Rockies from Kananaskis to Willmore Wilderness Park. The goal of this recovery plan is to ensure long-term persistence of all current natural populations of Porsild's bryum, and maintain population size at all sites within its Alberta range. The plan provides background information on Porsild's bryum, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at Porsild's bryum, a nationally and globally rare, rock-dwelling moss that forms brilliant, rich green cushions on wet, generally unstable calcereous rock. It was first documented in Alberta in 1828 in Jasper National Park, and was next found in the province over a century later in 1966. In total, eight localities have been documented to date. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
