Description

Soapweed and yucca moths have both been listed as Endangered in Alberta. Soapweeds (commonly known as yucca) and yucca moths have an obligate mutual relationship such that neither species can survive without the other. This plan provides background information on both species, describes the threats facing both, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and recover the two species.

This wildlife status report looks at the Verna's flower moth, a small, day-flying moth with a global distribution limited to the grassland and parkland natural regions of the southern prairie provinces. It is known from only five sites, three of which are in Alberta, and has a national status of Threatened. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

This wildlife status report looks at the yucca moth. The yucca moth is distributed throughout the United States and just reaches Canada in the Milk River region. The species currently has no status designations in Canada; although its host plant, the soapweed, has been designated as Threatened. This report is intended to summarize existing information on the yucca moth and to assist in the management of the moth, its mutualist host and their habitat in Alberta. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
