Description

The barred owl has been designated a Species of Special Concern in Alberta because it requires large tracts of old mixedwood forests and is subject to increased predation risk as these forests become more fragmented in Alberta. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining current barred owl population and distribution in the province, and improving habitat availability to ensure survival of the species. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

Description

In 2008, a collaborative project was initiated between Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Alberta Environment and Parks to augment the remaining Canadian population of Greater sage-grouse in southeastern Alberta. Over a two year period (2011-2012) 41 sage-grouse were captured in Montana and translocated to Alberta. These birds were monitored remotely through the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTTs). This report presents results of the project to date.

Description

The ferruginous hawk is a large raptor within the Grassland Natural Region of Alberta; inhabiting areas dominated by native prairie. The provincial ferruginous hawk population has been estimated every five years since 1982, except between the years 1993 and 1999. The population estimate is based on the number of active nests detected during each inventory year. During the 2010 inventory, a population estimate of 643 ± 169 breeding pairs of ferruginous hawks was calculated. This population estimate is similar to the 2005 estimate, which implies that the population is relatively stable at low numbers. Overall, Alberta's ferruginous hawk population still remains significantly lower than the 1992, and thus, it is essential to take management actions to assist with the recovery of this species.

This wildlife status report looks at the pygmy whitefish, a small, slim whitefish in Alberta that has been collected in specific habitats from only two locations in the province: Upper Waterton Lake and a restricted portion of the upper Athabasca River. Recent surveys indicate that it appears to be relatively common in Upper Waterton Lake and relatively uncommon in the Athabasca River. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

The Milk River Basin Species at Risk Conservation Strategy outlines a process by provide appropriate management on critical parts of the landscape to achieve multi-species conservation.
