This progress report highlights a selection of the activities, programs, and tools being pursued under the Water for Life strategy within the timeframe of December 2008 to March 2011. Each section of the report contains a selection of accomplishments and a featured story. A table outlining actions planned for the goals or key direction is also included.

This report identifies a method to estimate an ecologically-based flow regime on the basis of reductions from natural flow or the per cent exceedance from natural flow. It also provides background information and a jurisdictional review of current environmental flow (instream flow needs) knowledge in North America and international rivers. The report was prepared in support of outcomes and goals identified in the provincial Water for Life strategy and action plan.

To meet the Water for Life strategy's third goal to provide reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy Alberta's water, managers and agencies may consider many potential sources of water and a wide array of supply storage and management methods. In 2008, Alberta Environment and Water commissioned a review of methods for water supply storage and management that have never or rarely been used in Alberta. All the methods in the report are applicable to Alberta's mountain and prairie regions and all have been used in other parts of the world.
