Description

These guidelines are a general reference for wastewater management at new and existing coal mining operations. Alberta Environmental Protection's expectations for the collection, treatment and disposal of mine wastewaters are described. Relevant sections of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) that must be followed by coal mine operators are outlined. These guidelines describe the types of mine wastewaters generated and how they should be managed. Included are guidelines pertaining to settling pond design requirements, the use of wastewater treatment chemicals, and general comments on areas of wastewater management that require particular attention. Typical EPEA approval requirements for mine wastewater release limits, monitoring, and reporting are discussed. This document is intended for general reference only.

Water quality surveys were conducted in the Beaver River in the fall 1991 and in spring 1993 to 1) describe the effects of the spring and fall discharges from the Cold Lake/Grand Centre Regional Sewer System and from the continuous treated municipal wastewater discharges from the Canadian Forces Base-Cold Lake; and 2) determine if the long-term PPWB monitoring site at Beaver Crossing is representative if the Beaver River water quality that enters Saskatchewan.

Description

Frank Lake is a restored lake and wetland area east of High River, AB. It was designed to treat wastewaters from the High River Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Cargill Foods Limited meat packing plant, and to provide habitat for waterfowl production. Alberta Environmental Protection began a water quality monitoring program at Frank Lake in 1990. This program was designed to provide very basic characterization of the combined effluents and treatment efficiency of the first basin.
