Description

This document is a standard operating procedure for measuring Sulphur Dioxide concentration in ambient air environment. The use of the ultraviolet fluorescence SO2 analyzers technology for measuring ambient SO2 is the basis of this SOP. Staff from Alberta Environment and Parks, Airsheds and other organizations across Alberta monitoring SO2 concentration under the Joint Canada-Alberta Implementation Plan for Oil Sands Monitoring will benefit from this SOP. The SOP also ensures consistency and comparability of SO2 data collected across monitoring programs across Alberta. Future revisions to this SOP will reflect any technology updates.

Highlights progress made in implementing the Red Deer Region Fine Particulate Matter Response. In 2016, Alberta Environment and Parks and members of the Red Deer Air Quality Advisory Committee developed three priority objectives to implement management actions to reduce fine particulate matter levels in the Red Deer Air Management Area. This report provides an update on the state of the management actions related to these three objectives.

Description

The Red Deer air quality monitoring station has exceeded national standards for fine particulate matter (or PM2.5) for three consecutive reporting periods starting in 2013. Government initiated work in this area in 2013 to develop an action plan in response to the exceedances. A local response plan was developed collaboratively between municipalities, industry, the local airshed and the provincial government. The local plan has since been supplemented by a province-wide government action plan. Sources of emissions affecting regional ambient air quality are a combination of industrial, transportation or non-point sources such as home heating. This is one of the response plans being implemented regionally and provincially to help reduce particulate matter throughout Central Alberta

This report was developed in response to the exceedance of the Canada-wide Standard for fine particulate matter at Red Deer Riverside monitoring station. The science report represents a compendium of the shared understanding of the influences, both natural and anthropogenic, affecting fine particulate matter concentrations at Red Deer Riverside monitoring station, and includes the acknowledgement of gaps in knowledge. It serves as the basis for multi-stakeholder collaboration to identify, develop and implement management actions to address the issue. The Science Report is an accompanying document to the Red Deer Fine Particulate Matter Response and was developed in context of the goal of the Response.
