Description

The western small-footed bat is a Species of Special Concern in Alberta because it has a small range within the province, is found in a limited number of locations, and there is potential for its habitat to decline. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern as internal guidance documents for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They include background information including species biology, threats to species and habitat, and inventory/monitoring history.

In Alberta, the western small-footed bat is restricted to the southeast where it lives in the badlands. It has been designated as a Species of Special Concern in Alberta because of these narrow habitat requirements. This plan provides background information on the species and a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining the current distribution and breeding populations of the western small-footed bat in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. Description

Ord's kangaroo rat occurrence in Alberta is well documented for the Middle Sand Hills; however, there was sufficient uncertainty regarding the geographic distribution of this endangered species to warrant specialized surveys in other sand hill areas. Surveys were conducted for kangaroo rats from May through August 2001 in the vicinities of Hilda, Manyberries, and Purple Springs. Discovery of kangaroo rat populations in any of these areas would be significant because it could potentially reduce or refute the apparent geographic isolation of the northern population. One small population of kangaroo rats was discovered in a new vicinity near the Middle Sand Hills, on the south side of the South Saskatchewan River. Despite this single discovery, the surveys reaffirmed that kangaroo rats have a limited geographic distribution in Alberta and are presumably genetically isolated from more southern conspecifics.

Habitat loss, fragmentation and subsequent isolation of habitat patches due to human activities are major factors contributing to species endangerment. Large carnivores such as grizzly bears and cougars are particularly susceptible to fragmentation because they are wide-ranging and exist at relatively low population densities. Tools are lacking to predict how habitat-use and movement patterns of large carnivores may change in response to increasing anthropogenic activities such as suburban expansion, recreation, and the development of highways outside of protected areas. Local land management authorities and conservation organizations require empirical data and predictive tools to make and support land-use decisions that affect ecological connectivity for carnivores and their prey in areas with escalating development pressures. The Caribou Range Recovery (CRR) project aims to speed the recovery of human disturbances, so that their negative effects on woodland caribou, and other sensitive wildlife species, are lessened and eventually eliminated. After substantial planning, three caribou areas with significant human development were chosen: Little Smoky, Stony Mountain and Red Earth. Local planning teams were set up for each area and general areas for restoration work were chosen. Pre-treatment information was collected for all restored areas. The project will be expanded in 2002/03, to cover additional project areas in the Rocky Mountain foothills and further study the effectiveness of different restoration techniques.

A literature review was conducted to examine the potential uses and limitations of using trapper harvest data to monitor species distribution and population trend. Harvest, price, and distribution of harvest for most furbearers in Alberta is presented. In addition, an attempt is made to measure changes in abundance by mapping distribution across time and calculating an abundance index based on harvest and pelt price. To make better use of current and future Alberta furbearer harvest data, the following suggestions are offered: The Alberta trapper harvest data needs to be collected consistently for the entire province; harvest data collection should be based on pelt counts rather than unverified trapper affidavits; an index of abundance for each species based on a thorough analysis of correlations between harvest and various indices of effort, and the findings of others should be developed; data verification routines are required to enhance consistency; and each year all collected...

The swift fox (Vulpes velox) is a rare, house-cat-sized carnivore. Although once abundant in Canada, it was extirpated from Canada and northern Montana by the late 1930s. Since 1983, a reintroduction program has been underway to restore this species to Canada. Concurrent with the Canadian swift fox reintroduction program, evidence suggested that Canadian fox releases had also established a small swift fox population in north-central Montana. The focus of the 2000-2001 census was: to estimate changes in the distribution and abundance of swift foxes within Canada since the 1996-1997 census; and secondly, to estimate the distribution and abundance of swift foxes in adjacent areas of Montana. Woodland caribou habitat mapping in northern Alberta is incomplete and imprecise, as habitat relationships are not fully understood, and land cover mapping is neither consistent nor complete. This report examines the results of a methodology that integrates Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper imagery in the northeast boreal region and a dataset containing nearly 100,000 caribou locations acquired from global positioning system radio-collars for thirty-six individuals in order to identify the areas of potential use by caribou. The results demonstrate how remote sensing, geographic information systems techniques, and ecological information can produce the kinds of information necessary for sustainable land management.
