Description

Several reports have been prepared on the status of Alberta's native plant species. More recently, nonvascular plants have been given some attention and tracking lists have been developed. There is a relatively good information base for rare vascular species but a very limited one for rare non-vascular plants. This report analyzes the vascular plant species and discusses potential approaches to research, monitoring and conservation of vascular and non-vascular plants in the Grassland Natural Region. There is a fundamental recognition that habitat or landscape level approaches are preferred but that some single species attention may still be required. One hundred and twelve vascular plant species were selected for detailed analysis and preparation of protocols based on their distribution within the Grassland Natural Region.

This wildlife status report looks at the soapweed plant, a long-lived arid grassland perennial. Soapweed is distributed throughout the southwestern United States but is considered rare in Canada and occurs naturally at only two confirmed sites in Alberta along the Milk River and its tributary, the Lost River. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at the western spiderwort, a herbaceous perennial wildflower and the only species of Tradescantia native to Alberta. Widely distributed in the central United States, the western spiderwort is found at only four locations in Canada, one of which is along the old dune fields east of Pakowki Lake in Alberta. It is designated as Threatened in Canada. This report summarizes existing information on western spiderwort in Alberta as a step in assessing its status in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
