Description

This wildlife status report looks at the woodland caribou. The woodland subspecies of the caribou is distributed across the forested and mountainous regions of Canada, including northern and west-central Alberta. The woodland caribou is included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This report summarizes past and ongoing research on woodland caribou ecology in Alberta as a step in updating its status designation. The report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Grizzly bears, which once ranged throughout Alberta, are currently found in the Rocky Mountains and foothills, as far south as the United States border, and in the boreal forest from the British Columbia border to as far east as High Level, Peace River, Red Earth, and Slave Lake. The grizzly bear is considered a species that may be at risk of extinction or extirpation at the general status level. The goal of this recovery plan is to restore, and ensure the long-term viability of, a self-sustaining grizzly bear population in Alberta. The plan provides background information on grizzly bears, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Description

Little is known about the distribution, timing of occurrence, behaviour and habitat requirements of bats in Alberta. In particular, studies are urgently required in the northeast portion of the province where rapid industrial development is occurring. This information is critical for determining species status and for developing management strategies. To address some of these data deficiencies, a survey was conducted in northeastern Alberta in late June and July in 2001. The specific objectives of the survey were to: identify species' occurrences, possible range expansions, and habitat associations; evaluate a standard protocol for bat surveys and to provide recommendations as to its effectiveness; and provide future direction for bat research in Alberta.

Description

Ord's kangaroo rat occurrence in Alberta is well documented for the Middle Sand Hills; however, there was sufficient uncertainty regarding the geographic distribution of this endangered species to warrant specialized surveys in other sand hill areas. Surveys were conducted for kangaroo rats from May through August 2001 in the vicinities of Hilda, Manyberries, and Purple Springs. Discovery of kangaroo rat populations in any of these areas would be significant because it could potentially reduce or refute the apparent geographic isolation of the northern population. One small population of kangaroo rats was discovered in a new vicinity near the Middle Sand Hills, on the south side of the South Saskatchewan River. Despite this single discovery, the surveys reaffirmed that kangaroo rats have a limited geographic distribution in Alberta and are presumably genetically isolated from more southern conspecifics.
