The shortjaw cisco, a freshwater fish that occurs at relatively low densities in lakes across central Canada, is listed as Threatened in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to maintain a self-sustaining population of shortjaw cisco in Barrow Lake, Alberta over the long term. The plan provides background information on the shortjaw cisco, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Description

The shortjaw cisco is considered Threatened in Canada and has been approved for listing in Threatened in Alberta. To date, it has been verified at only one locality - Barrow Lake in the Canadian Shield region north of Lake Athabasca - although unconfirmed reports have also come from Lake Athabasca, Gregoire Lake, and Cold lake. The main objective of the work undertaken in 2001 was to search for other populations in the province. Additional distribution data would assist in assessing the status of this species by providing updated distribution data, a search effort context in which to evaluate the number of reported element occurrences, and a baseline for evaluation of future distribution trends.

This wildlife status report looks at the shortjaw cisco, a freshwater fish with trout-like bodies with with larger scales than trout or salmon and no teeth on the bones of the jaw. It is listed as threatened in Canada and may be at risk in Alberta. The only verified report of shortjaw cisco in Alberta is from Barrow Lake in the Canadian Shield region of the province. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

Barrow Lake, located about 60 km north of Fort Chipewyan, contains the only verified population of shortjaw cisco in Alberta. A specific search for shortjaw cisco in the area around Barrow Lake was undertaken in an effort to gather additional information on its extent of occurrence in Alberta. Eight lakes in the region north of Lake Athabasca and east of Wood Buffalo National Park were surveyed by gillnetting in July and August 2000. No new populations of shortjaw cisco were found at these sites. Seven other nearby lakes had been sampled in 1996 and 1997 with similar results. Catch-per-unit-effort data from Barrow Lake suggest that this population of shortjaw cisco appears to have been stable over at least the past five years and probably the last 30 years. However, further monitoring is required to determine population trends with a scientifically acceptable level of confidence.
