The Ord's kangaroo rat, a nocturnal rodent highly adapted for survival in arid environments, is listed as Endangered in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to ensure a viable, naturally self-sustaining population of Ord's kangaroo rats such that the species is no longer at risk of extinction in the province. The plan provides background information on the Ord's kangaroo rat, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Ord’s kangaroo rat is a small, nocturnal rodent adapted to arid environments. It is considered an endangered species both in Alberta and nationally. The recovery plan identifies a number of activities necessary to recover the species in Alberta, including identification of distribution, habitat requirements, and essential habitat. These needs are addressed in this report, which presents information about the current distribution and habitat requirements for the species across its range in the province.

This report provides recommended methods for translocating Ord's kangaroo rats in Alberta based on the successes and limitations observed in previous studies, with particular consideration of the unique properties of the Alberta population. This report also describes knowledge gaps and recommended research that should be undertaken to determine whether Ord's kangaroo rat translocations can be used in Alberta to mitigate population decline and local extirpation of isolated habitats.

Description

This recovery plan identifies the development of beneficial management practices (BMPs) for Ord's kangaroo rat as a recovery action contributing to the maintenance and recovery of this species in Alberta. The purpose of this document is to identify BMPs for resource managers and land user that will help mitigate effects of land use activities on this species and its habitat. These BMPs apply to a variety of land uses in Alberta including agricultural, industrial, rural, urban, commercial, access development and management and military activities. Although developed specifically for use in Alberta, these recommendations may also be applicable to other populations of these species in Canada or elsewhere. The recommendations were developed using current knowledge of this species' biology and habitat requirements, and based on known or anticipated effects of land use on this species, other species of kangaroo rats and other small mammals.

Description

The Alberta Recovery Plan for Ord's kangaroo rat calls for standardized population monitoring as a highly priority recovery activity. The purpose is to establish a long-term database that supports defensible, inter-annual comparisons of distribution, relative abundance, and survival, including: i) evaluation of population-persistence and rates of extinction and re-colonization of local populations; ii) quantification of variation and trends in relative abundance; and iii) estimation of annual survivorship. These measures will be used to direct management activities and to evaluate the relative success of the recovery of this species. This document provides a detailed population monitoring protocol to serve as a guide for implementation of long-term, standardized monitoring for the Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at the Ord's kangaroo rat, a medium-sized, nocturnal rodent adapted for survival in arid environments. The species is widespread in western North America, but reaches the northern edge of its range in southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. There, it inhabits sparsely-vegetated habitats with loose, sandy soils. These habitats are uncommon and fragmented within the Canadian range. The Ord's kangaroo rat is included on the list of species which may be at risk in Alberta because of their localized distribution and specific habitat requirements. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
