This framework summarizes information on the status, sustainability and management goals, objectives and regulations for northern pike in Alberta, and describes the strategic goals and tactical objectives for managing recreational fisheries. The overarching goal for recreational fisheries management is to have Alberta's fisheries producing ecological, social and economic benefits for long-term sustainability and use.

The focus of this framework is to provide a diversity of recreational angling opportunities across Alberta, as well as meeting the primary objectives of conserving biodiversity and providing for indigenous fishing rights and opportunities.

Description

Alberta Environment and Parks Policy and Operations Divisions for Fisheries Management have identified the need to update the province’s Fisheries Management Program to align with Alberta’s Fish Conservation and Management Strategy. As part of this fisheries management initiative, a draft was developed for Recreational Fisheries Management Frameworks for Northern Pike and Walleye. In Phase One of this project, public feedback received on key management questions. In Phase Two, feedback on these draft management frameworks. In Phase Three, consultation on some of the waters where fish populations are at a low to moderate risk status for long-term sustainability, and where new Recreational Fisheries Management Objectives (RFMO) are being proposed.

Description

In February and March 2018, the Government of Alberta hosted public information sessions on the Draft Provincial Woodland Caribou Range Plan, which had been released for review in December 2017. The intent and focus of these sessions was to provide an understanding on approaches being considered to support caribou conservation and recovery, and to listen to citizens living in communities that have a direct interest in caribou range planning.
