Description

This report summarizes the methodology and results of the first year of an ongoing community exposure and health effects assessment program undertaken in the Wood Buffalo region of northeastern Alberta. While the Wood Buffalo region enjoys good air quality most of the time, increased industrial activity and subsequent population growth has raised people’s awareness about air quality and quality of life in the region. In response to this, the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association has established a Human Exposure Monitoring Program in the region. Supported by scientific and technical assistance from Alberta Health and Wellness, information about the background, design and the first year of monitoring results are presented in this report.

This report summarizes the results of a community exposure and health effects assessment undertaken in the Wabamun area to gauge the impact of airborne contaminants on the health of the population. The report describes the population and personal distribution of exposure to airborne chemicals and particulates in the Wabamun area. Using a personal exposure model, the relative contribution of various exposure sources and pathways to airborne chemicals is estimated and associations between exposure to airborne chemicals and human health effects are described.

Disease coding and grouping, typically based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), is an important initial step in health statistics reporting. The development of a consistent classification scheme for mortality and morbidity is a challenge. The scheme needs to reflect health priorities of the province while remaining consistent with classifications in other jurisdictions to facilitate comparisons at national and international levels. The recent implementation of International Statistical Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10) has added to this challenge. Building on the work of national and international studies, this study defined 120 cause of death groupings with equivalent ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding to be used for routine health surveillance reporting in Alberta. This report is the first in a series of reports to examine data system quality issues in the health care system. It examines the number of cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) that were reported to the Alberta Communicable Disease Reporting System (CDRS) and to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) Hospital Inpatient System – two data systems upon which many provincial and national health statistics are based. Results show a 3-4 fold difference in the reported cases of HUS between the two data systems in 1994-2003. Findings of this study have implications for the two data systems and for improved reporting of HUS and other diseases from the two systems.
