Description

Alberta enjoys a wealth of natural features that can be seen in the diversity of our landscapes. They vary from hot, dry badlands to vast, unbroken forests, to alpine tundra and massive ice fields. The challenge for Albertans is to continue to designate and secure land that will represent the variety of these landscapes within the province. This report provides an overview of the land classification system that is used to describe our natural landscapes and that also serves as a tool to help measure our progress towards completing a network of protected areas. Land classification for protected areas is based on natural or biogeographic features such as geology, landform, soils and hydrology. Other factors affecting classification include an area’s climate, vegetation and wildlife. The classification system is set up so that larger, more general categories of land are identified and then divided into smaller units on the basis of their natural characteristics.

Trapping is a traditional activity that reflects cultural and aboriginal lifestyles, which Alberta Community Development (CD) wishes to support. A number of Registered Fur Management Areas (RFMA) were included within parks and protected areas designated or expanded between 1995 and 2001. Commitments to trappers in these areas will be honoured. In addition to the Wildlife Act and its regulations, the Provincial Parks Act and its regulations and the Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves and Natural Areas Act, fur trapping in Alberta's Parks and Protected Areas will also be managed pursuant to this policy. The intent of this policy is to ensure an appropriate balance is maintained between fur trapping and the public's desire for opportunities to view wildlife in a natural and safe setting and to make trapping operations as similar as possible between parks and protected areas and general Crown land. Wildhay Glacial Cascades Natural Area was officially established on December 20, 2000. This natural area covers approximately 25 square kilometres (1,233 hectares) preserving a special part of Alberta’s natural heritage within the Foothills Natural Region. Natural areas protect special and sensitive landscapes of local and regional significance while providing opportunities for education, nature appreciation and low intensity recreation. Wildhay Glacial Cascades Natural Area is an excellent example of an upper foothills river valley. The name given to this site signifies the role glacier meltwaters have played in creating the rolling terrain found here.

Pinto Creek Canyon Natural Area was officially established on December 20, 2000. This natural area covers 12.32 square kilometres (1,233 hectares) preserving a special part of Alberta’s natural heritage within the Foothills Natural Region. Pinto Creek Canyon Natural Area is home to Alberta’s only population of mountain goats outside of the Rocky Mountain Natural Region.

Brazeau Canyon Wildland Park is 50.4 square km (5,039 ha) in size. It was established on December 20, 2000. The park protects the Brazeau River valley and adjacent uplands, and includes the former Muskiki Lake Natural Area and the western part of Marshybank Ecological Reserve. Wildland parks are large undeveloped areas that cater to nature-based tourism and adventure travel. Includes a map delineating the park boundaries.

Wagner natural area is situated approximately 6.4 km west of the present city limits of Edmonton Alberta and encompasses approximately 160 ha of Crown land. The management plan stated that site has been 'designated by policy as a conservation natural area'. The following specific project objectives were identified: Complete a detailed soil survey and produce a soils map of the area; Complete a detailed vegetation inventory and produce a vegetation community type map of the area; Complete a plant community classification for the area based on a field survey, previously collected data and correlation with other work; Produce a report outlining the details of field and analytical methods, study results and a discussion of possible applications of the soil and vegetation inventories to biodiversity monitoring.
