Because domestic violence can and does have disastrous consequences for victims and their children, every criminal justice response to a domestic violence incident should be executed with sensitivity, diligence and above all, a firm understanding of the issues surrounding domestic violence. By creating and widely distributing this Domestic Violence Handbook, the Alberta government is demonstrating its commitment to eradicating family violence. Alberta’s dedication to ending family violence is ongoing, and as such, this Handbook will be electronically up-dated as the need arises to keep abreast of new developments in family violence research and programming.

Alberta’s environmental legislation sets out clear rules and obligations for the protection and wise use of the environment. If these rules are not followed, the government has a range of enforcement options, one of which is prosecution. If a prosecution ends in a guilty plea or a finding of guilt by a trial judge, the case ends in a sentencing. The court can decide to adopt a creative sentencing order as part of the sentence. In 2012, three new creative sentence orders were initiated by the court.Once the order has been adopted by the court, it is the responsibility of the environmental investigations liaison with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to follow up and ensure the order is carried through as laid out in the court document. An order can last up to three years or can even be extended with permission from the court. As of December 31, 2012, another 10 orders created in previous years are still being tracked.
