In December 2008, Alberta Health and Wellness announced the Alberta Pharmaceutical Strategy to help make drug coverage more accessible, sustainable and affordable for all Albertans. The strategy included two phases. The second phase, announced in October 2009, focuses on generic drug prices and expanding the roles of pharmacists. This fact sheet focuses on how generic drugs will be approached in this second phase of the strategy.

In December 2008, Alberta Health and Wellness announced the Alberta Pharmaceutical Strategy to help make drug coverage more accessible, sustainable and affordable for all Albertans. The strategy included two phases. This fact sheet provides an overview of the second phase of the strategy, which was announced in October 2009. Alberta Health and Wellness announced the creation of a Health Action Plan for Alberta in April 2008. A key component of this plan is the development of a pharmaceutical strategy. The majority of working Albertans are not covered by government-sponsored programs, and spending on drugs is increasing at a rate three times higher than that of physician or hospital services. To support the development of an Alberta Pharmaceutical Strategy, two consultations were undertaken in 2008. The Strategy outlined in this document is a response to the findings and recommendations of these consultations, and its goal is to make drug coverage more accessible, affordable, efficient and therapeutically effective.

A Health Action Plan for Alberta was announced by the Minister of Health and Wellness in April 2008. A key component of this plan is the development of a pharmaceutical strategy. A consultation process was implemented to meet key stakeholders, summarize their comments, and make key recommendations. Meetings were held with 16 stakeholder groups representing patients, physicians, pharmacists, employers, benefit providers, and the pharmaceutical industry. Written submissions were also welcomed. This document summarizes the stakeholders input and presents 10 recommendations for the government to implement.
