Description

The hare-footed locoweed is a tufted, low-growing perennial herbaceous plant growing from a stout taproot crowned by leaves with silvery hairs. It has attractive pink, pea-like flowers. It has been a designated Species of Special Concern in Alberta because it has a small distribution and there is a projected decline in quality of habitat. This plan provides background information on the hare-footed locoweed and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining current distribution and subpopulations of the species in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

Porsild's bryum is a small moss that is naturally rare and widely scattered throughout the northern hemisphere. In Canada, there are a total of 17 known populations with six of these occurring in Alberta. The Alberta Porsild's Bryum Recovery Plan identifies actions required to maintain or restore the current provincial status of the species. This report was commissioned to analyze habitat, substrate, and hydrological data collected from several Porsild's bryum populations and subpopulations in Alberta, and to interpret the findings as they relate to the goals and objectives of the provincial recovery plan for the species.

This report provides a summary of the APA Program from 2009 to 2011. APA has successfully acquired funds and in-kind contributions to support the three field seasons of work from 2009 to 2011. During the three years, in-kind contributions have increased significantly. Over 100 volunteers participated in APA either as volunteers, professional botanists, field trip leaders, etc. in the three years. From 2009 to 2011, APA volunteers contributed over 170 records to ACIMS, identified 95 rare plant species and submitted over 20 specimens to herbariums.

Western spiderwort, an herbaceous perennial flowering plant native to sand dune habitats and found in Alberta at only one location in the extreme southeast corner of the province, is listed as Threatened in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to maintain the existing habitat and distribution of western spiderwort, and to maintain a naturally, self-sustaining population of western spiderwort in Alberta. The plan provides background information on the plant, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

The Adopt-a-Plant Alberta program was initiated in 2005 to help address the shortage of information on population size and occurrence of most rare plants and lichens in Alberta. This information is needed to carry out provincial detailed status assessments of species. The idea behind the program was to train volunteer plant enthusiasts, "citizen scientists", from across the province to collect this information by searching for new locations and monitoring known sites of potentially at-risk plants and lichens. The program was designed to provide the training and support services needed to facilitate the collection of standardized data on rare plants by volunteers.

Western spiderwort, designated as Endangered in Alberta, is a plant found in the southeastern corner of Alberta, within the Grassland natural region. This study reports on the work done in 2007 and 2008 by the Adopt-a-Plant Alberta program to implement some of the recovery strategies outlined in the recovery plan for western spiderwort by collecting standardized population data and conducting invasive species management in western spiderwort habitat.
