Description

The tiny cryptantha, a small annual herb in the Borage family, is listed as Threatened in Alberta. This designation was based on the small area of occupancy of species in the province, and its small and possibly declining provincial population. The goal of the recovery plan is to maintain the existing habitat and distribution of tiny cryptantha and to maintain a viable self-sustaining population of the species in Alberta. This recovery plan provides background information on the tiny cryptantha, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and recover the species.

This wildlife status report looks at the hare-footed locoweed, a tufted, low-growing perennial herbaceous plant with silvery hairs and pink, pea-like flowers endemic to southwestern Alberta and western Montana. It is considered as "may be at risk" in Alberta because of a small number of occurrences and restricted distribution. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Porsild's bryum is a disjunct moss found in British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland and Nunavut. In Alberta, where it is listed as Endangered, it is found in 12 small subpopulations in the Rockies from Kananaskis to Willmore Wilderness Park. The goal of this recovery plan is to ensure long-term persistence of all current natural populations of Porsild's bryum, and maintain population size at all sites within its Alberta range. The plan provides background information on Porsild's bryum, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Description

The Adopt-a-Plant Alberta program was initiated in 2005 to help address the shortage of information on population size and occurrence of most rare plants and lichens in Alberta. This information is needed to carry out provincial detailed status assessments of species. The idea behind the program was to train volunteer plant enthusiasts, "citizen scientists", from across the province to collect this information by searching for new locations and monitoring known sites of potentially at-risk plants and lichens. The program was designed to provide the training and support services needed to facilitate the collection of standardized data on rare plants by volunteers.

Western spiderwort, designated as Endangered in Alberta, is a plant found in the southeastern corner of Alberta, within the Grassland natural region. This study reports on the work done in 2007 and 2008 by the Adopt-a-Plant Alberta program to implement some of the recovery strategies outlined in the recovery plan for western spiderwort by collecting standardized population data and conducting invasive species management in western spiderwort habitat.

The known population of slender mouse-ear-cress is estimated to be in the order of several thousand in years when conditions are favourable, and is considered May Be At Risk in the province. Description

A survey for slender mouse-ear-cress, a federally listed species at risk, was conducted in southeastern Alberta during mid-June to early July 2008. Slender mouse-ear cress has been assessed as "data-deficient" in Alberta based on a 2004 status report. The survey was undertaken to partly address a recommendation that surveys be done during non-drought years to determine whether significant numbers of additional subpopulations exist in Alberta, and how limited the distribution of slender mouse-ear cress might actually be. Twenty sites were visited and 18 quarter sections were searched over 10 days in mid June to early July. Slender mouse-ear cress was found at six locations, of which two are previously reported and four are new.

Alberta Sustainable and Resource Development initiated an inventory of small-flowered sand verbena and tiny cryptanthe in southern Alberta in July 2007, in order to obtain additional information on their populations, abundance and distribution. Priority areas for this survey included the Bow River populations, north of Medicine Hat, and near McNeill. Prioritization of these areas occurred because of the absence of other survey efforts covering these known populations of tiny cryptanthe and/or sand verbena.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at the whitebark pine, a hardy species that is an important part of high elevation forests in the mountainous regions of western North America where it is found. This hardy tree is a "keystone" species, as its seeds provide an important food source for a number of animals. In Alberta, the species is found in isolated populations in the Rocky Mountains from Willmore Wilderness Park south to the Canada-U.S. border. However, exact numbers of individuals are difficult to estimate because of limited stand inventory throughout its provincial distribution. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
