Description

Reports on a cyclic solvent process (CSP) experimental pilot project at Cold Lake in the Clearwater formation. CSP is a non-thermal, in-situ bitumen recovery process that utilizes injected solvent to reduce the viscosity of the bitumen, enabling its production from wells drilled for that purpose. The liquid-phase solvent is injected into a horizontal well cyclically and, because of the large mobility contrast between the solvent and the bitumen, it fingers into the bitumen. Following injection, the solvent-bitumen blend is produced from the same well. Cyclic injection and production operations continue for multiple cycles over several years until the bitumen produced no longer justifies the cost of the solvent or until the bitumen production rate is no longer economic.

This pilot project was conducted in the Panny area within the Peace River Oil Sands Area. The intent of the project was to evaluate the potential of a low-pressure process that utilizes downhole electric heaters combined with water and/or solvent injection to recover bitumen from the Bluesky formation. This technology has the potential to be commercialized in both the Panny area as well as many other bitumen/heavy oil reservoirs in Alberta.

Reports on a solvent-assisted steam assisted gravity drainage (SA -SAGD) experimental pilot scheme at Cold Lake in the Clearwater formation conducted by Imperial Oil. The experimental process design for the pilot involves the addition of five to 20 per cent by volume of hydrocarbon solvent (diluent) along with the injected dry steam in a dual horizontal well SAGD configuration, which is intended to result in increased bitumen rates and decreased steam oil ratios relative to the conventional SAGD process.

Description

This project addressed water management challenges in the oil sands open pit mining process through the application of innovative water treatment technologies. New technologies such as ceramic ultra-filtration, nano-flotation system along with commercial desalinations techniques were demonstrated to provide real operating data for basal and tailings water treatments. This report discusses details of recently completed pilots with new technology flow sheets which were designed for a full-scale commercial oil sands mine water treatment plant. The project is a participant in the Innovative Energy Technology Program.

Husky Oil Operations Limited implemented the first field-wide Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer (ASP) Flood using surfactants derived from renewable resources on January 23, 2008. Original incremental production and oil recovery factor estimates were not reached as of 2012. The primary cause of this project performing below forecast was the use of restored core instead of fresh core in lab work to select the chemicals. Uncertainties about geology have also played a role in the lower than expected results.

EnCana’s objective in this project was to re-pressure the top gas zones in sections 11 through 16-76-6W4M, to minimize the differential pressure primarily between the steam zone and the top gas zone. Maintaining a minimal differential pressure between the two zones ensures that the steam chamber (heat) is not lost into the gas zone, causing the SAGD process to be inefficient and potentially reducing overall oil recovery.

The Gas Re-Injection and Production Experiment (GRIPE) pilot project was originally proposed by Paramount Resources Ltd in 2004 as a possible technical solution to recover shut-in gas reserves in the Surmont Gas-over-Bitumen area. The concept of GRIPE is to test a method to produce shut-in gas pools by injecting exhaust gases and producing remaining gas while maintaining reservoir pressure.

The EnCAID project was designed to explore the use of air injection and downhole combustion to maintain formation pressure while accomplishing enhanced recovery of natural gas from shut-in “gas over bitumen” reservoirs. The project consisted of using a single air injection well in the Kirby K3 Wabiskaw gas pool to maintain the gas cap reservoir pressure and sweep gas to six existing production wells. A downhole combustion front was initiated and maintained to prevent oxygen from causing safety issues in the gas gathering system.

Chemical flooding of the Suffield Upper Mannville UU conventional heavy oil pool started in May, 2007 and continued throughout 2011. Although the project could be deemed a success, two pre-existing production-related issues remained unresolved, and a significant sodium hydroxide leak in July 2010 reinforce that the ASP flooding process is more dangerous and complicated compared to existing waterflood operations.
