Alberta's biggest customer for its oil is the United States. In the past several years there has been a resurgence in U.S. oil production, Total U.S. imports have decreased since 2008, but import of Alberta oil has not been affected by this. One in a series of fact sheets produced to give Albertans a basic knowledge of the royalty system and assist them in effectively participating in royalty review discussions.

Notes that the oil sands have replaced conventional crude oil as the major source of Alberta's oil production. In 2014, approximately 15 per cent of Alberta's total oil production was used by refineries within the province, 11 per cent was delivered to refineries in other parts of Canada, and 74 per cent was exported to U.S. markets. One in a series of fact sheets produced to give Albertans a basic knowledge of the royalty system and assist them in effectively participating in royalty review discussions.

Between 2004 and 2014, Alberta’s international merchandise exports rose 91% to a record $121.4 billion. By comparison, exports from the rest of Canada rose only 15% over the same period. Although higher prices and volumes of crude oil exports were the main drivers of Alberta’s export growth, the manufacturing sector and especially the agricultural sector also made sizeable contributions to overall export growth.
