Biogas consists of methane (CH4) and carbon-dioxide (CO2) along with some trace gases such as water vapour, hydrogen sulphide (H2S), nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbon dioxide and trace gases such as water vapour and H2S must be removed before the biogas can be used because: the hydrogen sulphide gas is corrosive; water vapour may cause corrosion when combined with H2S on metal surfaces and reduce the heating value

Description

Dissolved gases in well water are a common occurrence in Alberta. The major gases found in wells are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide. Information on hydrogen sulfide, a gas with a rotten egg odour, is discussed in Agrifacts 716 (D14) Removing Hydrogen Sulphide from Water, so hydrogen sulfide will not be discussed in this publication. Common problems with methane and carbon dioxide are “spurting” taps and priming problems (gas locking) in pumps. The gas problem varies in severity – from occasional “spurting” from the hot water taps to a constant flow of gas from the well casing.

Description

Methane is a colourless, odourless gas and is lighter than air. Methane is not considered toxic, but it is an asphyxiant at a concentration of over 50 per cent in air. Methane is extremely flammable and can be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Methane is explosive at volumes of 5 per cent to 15 per cent (50,000 ppm to 150,000 ppm) in air. Although methane will rise, it can displace oxygen in confined spaces such as cisterns, pumphouses or well pits.

Methane (CH4) is a major greenhouse gas. It is produced during anaerobic decomposition of manure and accumulates around manure storage areas. Methane emissions from manure depend on the way manure is managed (liquid manure systems produce more methane than solid manure systems) and environmental factors such as temperature and moisture (warmer temperatures and moist conditions will produce greater amounts of methane).
