In 2014, Alberta’s the chemicals and petroleum refining (CPR) sector had total revenues of $35.6 billion, accounting for 45% of total manufacturing revenues. Although this sector’s revenues rose by two-thirds between 2004 and 2014, they are sharply lower in 2015 as lower crude oil prices get reflected in lower prices for refined petroleum products.

Using the three commonly accepted yardsticks for ranking an economy’s sectors we will examine which is Alberta’s largest manufacturing sector. There is no easy answer to the above question as all three yardsticks rank different sectors on top. Using revenues Alberta’s refineries sector ranks well ahead of the other sectors. If the sectors are ranked using employment as the yardstick, fabricated metals ranks first. Finally, on a GDP basis machinery is the top ranked manufacturing sector in Alberta.
