Alberta Environment has released revised guidelines for the remediation of barite-contaminated sites. The Barite Soil Remediation Guidelines have been revised to reflect updated toxicity information. Assessing Drilling Waste Disposal Areas and the Alberta Tier 1 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines have been revised to incorporate the new barite guidelines.

Description

Releases of salt to land often occur in association with activities such as oil and gas production, salt/sand processing and storage facilities at highway maintenance yards, rendering plants, runoff from snow removal dumps and the transportation of saline material for industrial use. These salts can be very mobile and have significant environmental impacts. The intent of this guideline is to develop awareness and understanding of the salt spill problem and the necessity for effective and complete remediation, to provide an overview of effective site assessment and remediation procedures, and to summarize regulatory requirements in Alberta, including salt remediation objectives.
