The purpose of the fund is to hold security deposits to assure satisfactory land reclamation will be carried out pursuant to approvals under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). When conditions of the approval are met and a reclamation certificate is issued, the funds are returned to the depositor.

Assessing Drilling Waste Disposal Areas and the Alberta Tier 1 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines have been revised to incorporate the new barite guidelines.

Implementation of these guidelines will facilitate the application of uniform standards to the clean-up of both active and reclaimed UST sites in Alberta. The methodology has been developed to provide flexibility in the approach to remediation while ensuring the protection of human health and the environment.
