The goal of this manual is to provide guidance on re-establishing the vegetation component of upland ecosystems on reclaimed landscapes, and on evaluating the success of re-establishment efforts. It emphasizes the techniques and methodologies necessary to establish upland forest plant species and ecosystems appropriate to given site conditions and reclamation objectives. Oil sands operators are required to use the Guideline under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

The purpose of reclamation in Alberta is to achieve land capability equivalent to that which existed prior to disturbance. This manual is intended to facilitate evaluation of land capabilities for the forest ecosystems on natural and reclaimed lands in the Athabasca oil sands region, as required by Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act approvals and by terms of reference for environmental impact assessments. The manual outlines the procedure for determining land capability rating for natural and reclaimed soils in the region. Guidance is also provided for sampling methods and intensities.

This report examines plant species used in reclamation and their tolerances for soil salinity, sodicity and pH. The information for each species was obtained from a review of the literature and unpublished information conveyed through personal interviews with people conducting research in this area or working in reclamation. The objective of this report is to determine if the current values for soil salinity, sodicity and pH need to be revised to reflect plant species' tolerances for these soil parameters. The results indicate that the current values used for soil salinity, sodicity and pH should not be changed at this time.

The guideline was developed by the Oil Sands Wetlands Working Group which had representation from government, industry, consulting, university and aboriginal communities.
