Description

The purpose of the fund is to hold security deposits to assure satisfactory land reclamation will be carried out pursuant to approvals under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). When conditions of the approval are met and a reclamation certificate is issued, the funds are returned to the depositor.

For each work plan, context for the information gap being addressed is presented, followed by detailed descriptions of the major tasks and sub-tasks that need to be completed to fill each information gap.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The objectives of the 2017 monitoring and sampling programs were to evaluate the groundwater quality at selected areas of the historical gas plant and the performance of the containment wall and treatment corridor.

In June 2011, the updated 2010 Reclamation Criteria for Wellsites and Associated Facilities for Cultivated Lands, Forested Lands, and Native Grasslands were released. The Reclamation Criteria Advisory Group recommended that the 2010 criteria be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary as knowledge of ecosystem processes improves. Throughout the 2011 field season, questions relating to the three 2010 Criteria along with their assessment tools were tracked and these questions and answers have been compiled into this document. Other frequently asked questions on the application form and peatlands have also been included.

BMPs provide a reasonable level of guidance on practice for activities representing moderate risk and are based on imperfect knowledge. When using this document it is important to think about interactions between individual BMPs, as well as the BMPs and external factors.
